Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley) committed a triple murder during an exorcism performed on her. The Catholic Church became involved, and she has since been in a Catholic psychiatric hospital in Rome. The film shows a news tale and police investigation showing the three members of the clergy whom she murdered. Her daughter, Isabella, learned of the murders from her father, who died three days after telling her.
Twenty years before long, Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) is in the process of filming a documentary about exorcisms, and to find out more about her mother, she visits a teach in Rome. She meets two priests, Ben (Simon Quarterman) and David (Evan Helmuth). Ben and David take Isabella with them on an exorcism performed on Rosalita (Bonnie Morgan). They bring along medical equipment to determine if it’s possession or mental illness. Rosalita attacks the crew after spouting out obscene remarks in different languages and accents. She calls Isabella by her name, despite not knowing her. Eventually, they get her under control.
When Isabella goes to visit her mother, Maria, in the asylum, she finds that her mother speaks in different accents and has paintings all over the walls. She has inverted crosses carved into her arms and her bottom lip. Maria tells Isabella that killing a outcome is against God’s will, then lets out an ear-shattering scream. Isabella tells David and Ben that she had an abortion years ago and her mother had no way of knowing that—another sign that showed possible possession. As the crew prepares to perform an exorcism/analysis on Maria, David worries about losing his job, since the Church does not authorize exorcisms lacking undeniable proof that the patient is indeed possessed. During the procedure, Maria mentions knowing what Ben did in the past, as well as Isabella’s outcome. She breaks free of her restraints and sends Ben flying into the door, also knocking David to the ground. The doctors rush in before long after.
After analyzing the data from the video and audio files, they present the evidence to the Church. David shows many signs of stress, as Ben plays the audio files over and over, listening to the part where Maria says “I know what you did”. Ben then finds that there are four different demons speaking in unison in a different clip. David is to perform a baptism at his church, in which Michael tags along to record. The service starts lacking thing until he holds the baby to start the Immersion Baptism. He then mutters some lines from the Bible and starts forcefully submerging the baby in the holy water, staring blankly at the camera. The crowd of people rush up to save the baby as he passes out.
REVIEW: Well folks, only six days into 2012, I can safely say that I’ve seen the show that’s all be guaranteed to end up number one with a bullet on my “worst of 2012” list when I write it next December. If you’ve read my reviews of films like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY or THE LAST EXORCISM, you’ll likely assume that I have a thing against “found footage” movies. For the most part, yes- I despise this technique, but there have been some fantastic films made this way, including the REC films. While I pretty much figured that the first weekend of January relief date predestined that THE DEVIL INSIDE wasn’t much of a film, at worst I was in the family way a PARANORMAL ACTIVITY ripoff. What I got was much, MUCH of poorer quality.
I’m not exaggerating when I say THE DEVIL INSIDE is among the worst films I’ve ever reviewed for JoBlo.com. The only two that come close to it’s amount of inanity are maybe PASSION PLAY, and TWIXT. Certainly THE DEVIL INSIDE is the first time I ever found myself in a theatre where an audience, that, mind you, had seen the film for free, were so enraged when it was over that everyone in the theatre started booing and throwing things at the screen once the credits rolled. Truly, this is a terrible film.
Even if you go in just wanting to see some cool exorcisms, you likely won’t get much from this that you haven’t seen in other, far better films. Even something I despised like THE LAST EXORCISM seems like the original, classic THE EXORCIST in comparison to this piece of crap. The two exorcisms are total retreads, with seemingly whole exchanges life ripped of from the William Friedkin classic (or close enough). The acting is unfathomably terrible, and like something out of an Ed Wood show. There’s a hilarious scene where one of the actors, playing a priest, is supposed to be having a cigarette, but seems so uncomfortable holding in his hands that the audience started to snicker, especially when he puts it out lacking ever even taking a drag. It looks like this actor had never held a cigarette in his life, with it only life shoehorned into the scene because the director probably thought it looked cool.
The amount of stupidity on show from our main characters here is dreadful, and Vatican City is described as the kind of place where a priest can very nearly drown a baby, or woman could murder a name in a hospital, lacking ever having to worry about the cops. And when they do show up, they’ll be so laughably incompetent that they seem like they walked out of a Keystone Kops small from the twenties.
Apparently, THE DEVIL INSIDE is just the first of what threatens to be a run of low-budget films to come from Paramount’s new “Insurge” division, which is devoted to finding the next PARANORMAL ACTIVITY style cash-cow. Yeah, this ain’t it folks. I’m really amazed/horrified that Paramount would stoop so low as to attach their logo to something as amateurish as this, as this strikes me as a film that should have been deemed unreleasable. As much as I didn’t like the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films, I can see why people delight in them, and at their absolute worst, they’re about 1000x better than this. This is truly a film to avoid at all costs, and in fact should be boycotted by anyone who finds it absurd that a studio would have the gall to relief something so amateurish on 2000 screens, and then charge people admission to see it. This gets a huge, stout zero in my books.
