In 1973, the Loud family became a television sensation of a new kind. It was long before a metal rock star showed his eccentric family on the small screen and decades before housewives had screaming matches with each other on camera in public.
CINEMA VERITE tells the in the rear-the-scenes tale of the groundbreaking documentary “An American Family,” which chronicled the lives of the Louds in the early 1970s and catapulted the Santa Barbara family to notoriety while making a new television genre: the reality TV run. Oscar®, Golden Sphere and Emmy® nominee Diane Lane (“Secretariat,” “Unfaithful”), Oscar® and Golden Sphere winner Tim Robbins (“Mystic River,” “Dead Man Walking”) and Golden Sphere and Emmy® winner James Gandolfini (“Where the Wild Things Are,” HBO’s “The Sopranos”) star in the HBO Films presentation, directed by Oscar® nominees Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (“The Nanny Diaries,” HBO’s “American Magnificence”) and written by David Carbonated water (“The Omen,” “Punchline”). CINEMA VERITE debuts in April.
The film also stars Patrick Fugit (“Very nearly Well-known,” “Saved!”), Kathleen Quinlan (“Apollo 13,” “A Civil Action”), Lolita Davidovich (“Hollywood Homicide,” “Gods and Monsters”), Shanna Collins (“Swingtown,” “In My Sleep”) and Thomas Dekker (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street”).
CINEMA VERITE is an HBO Films presentation of a Pariah Production; Gavin Polone (“Gilmore Girls,” HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Zanne Devine (“Simple A,” “The Guardian”) executive produce; Karyn McCarthy (“Syriana,” HBO’s “John Adams”) produces.
“An American Family” was a total departure from the television shows of the time when it aired in 1973, and brought public scrutiny to a family unprepared for the consequences. It place the Louds in the focus as the parents (Diane Lane, Tim Robbins) struggled with their marriage while raising their children. In particular, Pat was criticized for her support of her openly gay son Lance (Thomas Dekker) at a time when homosexuality was rarely represented on television.
CINEMA VERITE gives a in the rear-the-scenes look at how the original PBS run was made by producer Craig Gilbert (James Gandolfini). While he aimed to have an impact on culture, he also felt that the family’s struggles were relatable to many Americans in a way that the Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family were not. Filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond (Patrick Fugit, Shanna Collins) spent seven months filming the family in 1971 and were often at odds with Gilbert about what content was apt to film.
Principal photography on CINEMA VERITE was completed in Southern California, with additional filming in New York City, in summer 2010. HBO Films vice president Tara Grace and director of development Jennifer Soskin are the executives in charge of production.

If the clichéd rom-com is about a woman who can’t get a man but ends up with two before the end, then the cliched ‘male writer’s film’ (a growing subgenre) usually contains a penniless writer in a picturesque city who meets women who say cryptic things before having sex with them in meadows by disused railway tracks. All those boxes are clicked in The Woman In The Fifth.
University lecturer and writer Tom Ricks (Hawke) is in Paris to reconcile with his ex-wife and gain access to his their daughter. Robbed of his wallet and clothes, Tom books himself into a cheap and dingy café/hotel, the type where the only other patron plays loud music and won’t flush the mutual toilet. In need of cash, proprietor Sesar (Guesmi) offers Tom a weird job as a security guard. Meanwhile, Tom meets into Margit (Thomas) at a writing get-together and they embark on a relationship.
As you probably can guess from that synopsis, the plot for The Woman In The Fifth is a higgledy-piggledy affair. Mixing elements of ancient Polanski thrillers before launching headlong into a nightmarish Lynchian twisteroo, this tale gets more surreal as it moves at a snail’s pace to its head-scratcher of a climax. With it, but, goes any sympathy for Tom and his situation. Marooned in a foreign city is okay to get on board with but once that’s left in the rear and the tale continues down a bizarre path would you really give a name like Sesar your passport? – any appreciative of Tom’s actions becomes tapers off. Soon it’s unclear why he’s hanging nearly he doesn’t spend too much time with his daughter to warrant this turmoil and he ultimately forgets about her in the arms of Thomas and Kulig. Interest in his tale wanes just as things are supposed to be heating up.
Director Pawlikowski’s throws in odd small touches to keep curiosity levels high, like Hawke’s security job, which entails letting people in a steel door if they possess the right password; before long, he finds a trail of blood inside the door. Hmm. Hawke’s temperamental presence keeps the eyes on the screen but his character just isn’t defined enough.
A curious small thriller that’s impossible to following guess, the deliberate maintenance of character at arm’s length is alienating.

In 1891, Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) delivers a package to Dr. Hoffmanstahl—payment for a letter he was to deliver. Hoffmanstahl opens the package, triggering a hidden bomb which is prevented from detonating by the intervention of Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.). Holmes takes the letter and disposes of the bomb while Adler and Hoffmanstahl escape. Holmes before long finds Hoffmanstahl assassinated. Adler meets with Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) to clarify the actions, but Moriarty poisons her—deeming her position compromised by her like for Holmes.
Some time before long, Dr. Watson (Jude Law) arrives at 221B Baker Street, where Holmes discloses that he is investigating a run of seemingly unrelated murders, terrorist attacks, and business acquisitions, that he has connected to Moriarty. Holmes meets with the Gypsy fortune-bank clerk Simza (Noomi Rapace), the intended recipient of the letter he had taken from Adler, sent by her brother Rene. Holmes defeats an murderer sent to kill Simza, but she flees before Holmes can interrogate her. After the wedding of Watson and Mary Morstan (Kelly Reilly), Holmes meets Moriarty for the first time. Moriarty informs Holmes that he murdered Adler and will kill Watson and Mary if Holmes’ interference continues.
Moriarty’s men attack Watson and Mary on a train to their honeymoon. Holmes, having followed the pair for protection, throws Mary from the train into a river below where she is picked up by Holmes’ waiting brother Mycroft (Stephen Fry). After defeating Moriarty’s men, Holmes and Watson travel to Paris to locate Simza. When she is found, Holmes tells Simza that she has been targeted because Rene is working for Moriarty, and may have told her about his plans. Simza takes the pair to the headquarters of an anarchist group to which she and Rene had formerly belonged. They learn that the anarchists have been mandatory to plant bombs for Moriarty.
The trio follows Holmes’s deduction that the bomb is in the Paris Opera. But, Holmes realizes too late that he has been tricked and that the bomb is in a nearby hotel; the bomb kills a number of assembled businessmen. Holmes discovers that the bomb was a cover for the assassination of Meinhart—one of the attendees—by Moriarty’s aide, Sebastian Moran (Paul Anderson). Meinhart’s death grants Moriarty ownership of Meinhart’s weapons factory in Germany. Holmes, Watson, and Simza travel there, following clues in Rene’s letters.
At the factory, Moriarty captures, interrogates and tortures Holmes, while Watson is under sniper fire from Moran. Holmes spells out Moriarty’s horrific plot, revealing that the Professor secretly bought and owns shares in multiple war profiteering companies, and intends to instigate a world war to make himself a fortune. Meanwhile, Watson uses the cannon he had been hiding in the rear to ruin the lighthouse in which Moran is concealed. The structure collapses into the warehouse where Moriarty is holding Holmes captive. Watson, Simza, and an injured Holmes reunite and escape aboard a moving train. Holmes deduces that Moriarty’s final target will be a peace summit in Switzerland, making an international thing.
At the summit, Holmes reveals that Rene is the murderer and that he is disguised as one of the ambassadors—having been given radical reconstructive surgery by Hoffmanstahl to alter his appearance. Holmes and Moriarty, who is also in attendance, retreat outside to discuss their competing plans. Watson and Simza find Rene and stop his assassination attempt, but Rene is himself silenced by Moran. Outside, Holmes reveals that he earlier replaced Moriarty’s personal diary that contained all his plans and financing with a duplicate. The original was sent to Mary in London, who decrypted the code using a book that Holmes had noticed in Moriarty’s office during their first meeting. Mary passes the information to Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan) who seizes the bulk of Moriarty’s assets, financially crippling him. Holmes and Moriarty anticipate an impending physical confrontation, and both realize Moriarty would win due to Holmes’ injured shoulder. Holmes instead grapples Moriarty and forces them both over the balcony and into the Reichenbach waterfall below.
Their bodies are not found. Following Holmes’ funeral, Watson and Mary arrange to have their belated honeymoon when Watson receives a package containing a breathing device of Mycroft’s that Holmes had noticed before the summit. Contemplating that Holmes may still be alive, Watson foliage his office to find the delivery man. Holmes, having concealed himself in Watson’s office, reads a fresh eulogy on Watson’s typewriter and adds a question mark after the words “The End”.

For a show about a former Civil War captain whisked off the face of the Earth to the surface of Mars, John Carter is a very simple tale. Alien politics are essentially boiled down to the most simplistic form of excellent vs. evil as a mysterious group called the Holy Therns aid the inevitable destruction of the earth’s inhabitants. Why? Because that’s the way it is. As a result, you are likely to read a wide range of opinions on the film and most of them will be valid, it just all depends on your perspective.
For as uncomplicated as the tale is and for as weak as the dialogue is, John Carter ruins well made and well told by a director that knows a thing or two about maintenance an audience interested. Andrew Stanton follows in the recent footsteps of Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) moving from animated films to live action after bringing us Finding Nemo and WALL-E. He now trains that purposeful and understated storytelling to the “real” world, although not lacking a few numerous nods to the past and some uncharacteristic bumps along the way.
Throughout the description of cinema numerous sci-fi films have been inspired by the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Burroughs made the character of John Carter in 1912 and his tales have influenced a generation of filmmakers including George Lucas, James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. So if you see bits of Star Wars, Avatar and Indiana Jones inside John Carter don’t be surprised.
You’ll mind Taylor Kitsch, as the titular character, involved in scenes that seem as if they were ripped directly out of prior films, the Star Wars saga in particular, as an arena battle bears a striking resemblance to a similar scene in Attack of the Clones and the speeder race from Return of the Jedi is now taken to the streets of Helium, the fictional city on Mars that serves as the home for John Carter’s soon-to-be like interest, Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).
It wasn’t until 52 years after Burroughs introduced the world to his Mars run that the title of one of his tales really included John Carter. Instead he started the run in 1912 with “A Princess of Mars”, a title that refers to Dejah Thoris. Here her city is under the threat of complete annihilation as Sab Than (Dominic West), the Prince of Zodanga, is under the influence of the leader of the Therns, Matai Shang (Mark Strong). Than’s offer is simple, either Dejah accepts his hand in marriage or Helium will be ruined. Not too keen on the arranged marriage thought, in order to save her people, Dejah eventually teams up with John Carter whose path to Mars is anything but conventional.
John Carter is told from the perspective of its author as we meet a young Edgar Rice Burroughs (Daryl Sabara) whom we learn is the nephew of the recently deceased John Carter. Willed all of Carter’s belongings with special accent on his diary, Burroughs immediately opens to page one and starts conception as the tale moves to Arizona 1861.
Here John Carter is on his own and in search of gold, but the former Confederate soldier is brought into custody and questioned to rejoin the fight. Refusing, he flees only to have a run-in with a band of Native Americans end in the discovery of a mysterious cave and Carter’s resulting moving to Mars (or Barsoom as it’s referred to by its native inhabitants) as a result of what he finds inside.
Carter’s initial landing on Mars finds him first acclimating himself to the difference in gravitational pull, a detail that gives him superhuman strength and jumping ability. His ability is witnessed by Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe), the leader of an alien race known as Tharks whom you will recognize by their conservational skin, four arms, nine-foot tall bodies and faces with tusks. Other than that, they look just like you and I.
He reluctantly becomes a Thark warrior and injects himself into an eventual aerial battle between Zodanga and Helium warships. In the process he helps Dejah and reveals himself and his abilities to Sab Than and his Thern compatriots. The stage is set, but there will be the eventual moments where Carter questions whether or not he wants to help Dejah and her people or just get back to Earth. Considering Lynn Collins is gorgeous and their relationship doesn’t appear to be more than skin deep, it’s pretty simple to figure out what his choice will be.
Never mind the similarities to previous sci-fi and fantasy features, those aspects I can very easily overlook considering Stanton does a excellent job making them his own inside the forbidding Mars landscape. It’s John Carter’s overall ease and acceptance of his situation that bothered me more than anything else. This, along with the very simplistic nature of each and every relationship and plot point.
Once Carter finds himself on Mars he’s confused but needs to quickly rely on his survival skills, believing Tars Tarkas and those that accompany him mean him harm. From that point on he essentially accepts everything else that happens. Considering we’re talking about a guy used to a world that is basically made up of cowboys and Indians, the thought he’d so quickly be converted into comfortable nearly nine-foot tall aliens with four arms, perched warships and a weapon that disintegrates anything in its path is a bit of a stretch. I know I’d be freaking out.
Yet, somehow Stanton and his cast make it simple to overlook most of the film’s shortcomings. If there is ever a hitch in delivery it’s largely due to screenwriting that makes the film’s characters seem a bit slow on the uptake. “You’re John Carter of Earth?” Dejah questions. “Yes ma’am,” Carter answers. Seriously? You’ve been palling nearly the dusty landscape of Mars for the last day or so and you’re having this conversation now and why does it have to be “John Carter of Earth”?
Stanton is better than this, something he showed with WALL-E, a film that doesn’t need declarative statements such as this to get its point across. A glance and a realization is all that’s needed. Dejah wasn’t convinced Carter was from Earth, now she is, I don’t reckon she needs to verbalize it. Moments like this happen on more than one occasion, which is a shame in an otherwise entertaining feature.
Surprisingly enough, the best performances come from the trio of actors featured as Tharks. Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church and Samantha Morton get the most time as the nine-foot tall conservational beings and whether it’s their voice work, the routine capture or a combination of all three, I really thought their characters came alive and were the most complex additions to the film.
There are also a few action beats that stand out, above all an operatic slaughter engineered by Carter that I never expected, especially when you see the Disney logo in front of the film.
The strongest piece of the tale is the film’s end, once you’ve accepted all that’s come before it and see what Stanton was going for and aspiring to accomplish. There’s a reason the film is titled John Carter and not John Carter of Mars and I felt the final moments firmly established that, setting up the potential for a fantastic contract if given a chance. Hopefully, if they get that chance, some more complicated themes can be explored in future installments. I’ve never really read Burroughs’ “Barsoom” run, but just in skimming their plots there are plenty more fascinating themes and scenarios to find out. Fingers crossed.
